Shelby Today

June 3rd 2013 is the FIRST birthday of my very best friend, The Shelbz!!! Of course, I’m making her a special doggie birthday cake and I’ll be getting her a brand new toy! 🙂 JEEZ she has grown SO MUCH. she went from about 3lbs to 75lbs in just one year, and guess what?!? She’s still growing! 1/2 German Shepherd and 1/2 Timber Wolf this pretty girl couldn’t be any sweeter or more intelligent. She amazes me every day with the crazy things she does! So, I’m thinking I’m going to go to dollar tree and get her a little party hat just for laughs, strap it to her head and take her around with me to the vet (to get her flea/heartworm meds refilled) and then I’ll take her to the pet store to pick out her new toy all while wearing her hat of course. hahahaha!! I’m such a mean mom! Hell maybe I will make her a T-Shirt!! muhahahahahahaha!

The hubby took down the gate to our kitchen (we generally confined her there when we left and at night) he moved it to the cat room so that she can’t get to their food or litter box, but she is without a doubt queen of the house now. Happy Early birthday from dad, Shelbsters. The cats are SERIOUSLY hating this new arrangement but, Marley is starting to put her paw down and show miss Shelby who’s boss. I don’t think either one of them realize Marley is literally less than a 10th of her size, Marley doesn’t seem to notice, and if she does, she doesn’t care. She smacks Shelby when she gets too close, She steals her food without a second thought, she will lick Shelby’s face when she’s sleeping just to make her mad, and she tries her damnedest to pin her down and bite her like she used to when Shelby was 1/2 of Marley’s size. Don’t pity the Shelbz tho, she is more than capable of taking care of herself and she knows better than to hurt Marley moo. she just takes it or nudges Marley out of her way. While Joe pouts in the bed room and only comes out late at night after sneaking down the hall and checking repeatedly to be sure Shelby is asleep. It really is quite comical.

So let me explain why Shelby is my best friend.. I have now been smoke free for 4 days. Yay go me, but wait.. that means I am one HELL OF A BIZNITCH! Shelby doesn’t care if I smoke or if I don’t, she never complains that I’m being rude, she doesn’t care if I burp like a man when I’m home alone. She doesn’t care if my singing is off key or I dress like a slob and don’t wear make up. All she really cares about is that there is water to drink, food in her dish and that I pet her and throw her toy once in a while. She likes to cuddle and she’s quiet and listens. Sure, she probably doesn’t understand much of what I say to her but the way she cocks her head to the side and stares at me, I like to pretend she does. Sometimes she winks at me like we have some kind of inside joke that I don’t remember so, I wink back just in case. She snuggles me and gives me kisses.

I saved Shelby’s life. She was 4 weeks old when the people were trying to sell her as a german shepherd and malamute mix claiming that she was 8 weeks old. HELLO, 8 weeks old and 3 pounds? I don’t think so. Not to mention they claimed she had all of her shots, and had been de-wormed. Nope they lied again, the poor thing was seriously covered in fleas, urine, and had worms so bad.. well.. I’ll spare you the details. She was so anemic that her gums were stark white, and also very dehydrated..Oh, they were also “feeding” her adult dry dog food. AT 4 WEEKS OLD! She couldn’t even fit the food in her mouth let alone eat it. She was so underweight we had to feed her puppy formula, and de-worm her ourselves which was a disgusting and long process. I paid the lady for her.. just to make sure I would get her. It’s been a lot of long hours and sleepless nights of feeding, wrapping her in a blanket and sitting with her in front of a heater.. yeah, Middle of summer and the poor thing was so sick we had to sit in front of a heater. I stayed up with her every night, I fed her every 4 hours as if she was my own child, and I saved her life. Ya know what? She is in perfect health now a year later. She’s a mama’s girl and follows me around and likes to snuggle, but she’s healthy and she’s happy! If you ever put your own blood sweat and tears into another living being that’s days from death and YOU fight WITH them day after day until They are healthy, you will find out it is the most rewarding feeling in the world. There is no unconditional love outside of the love of an animal.
